Novak Djokovic always manages to improve, says former player
In an interview with Sky Sport, the former world No. 25 Filippo Volandri commented on how Novak Djokovic manages to improve despite having already achieved a lot of success. 'Djokovic is one of the guys who is never satisfied', said Volandri. 'He has been preparing every match with the strategy analyst Craig O'Shannessy for more than a year, and Craig himself is giving us as coaches new methods to work with younger players. The final against Nadal at the Australian Open is the example of how an analyst can make a difference. Djokovic's return against Nadal was great, Novak always returned in a different way depending on the situation he faced but using variety. He won on the backhand side against Nadal's forehand, but at the beginning of every point he was adapting his game to the plan."
Volandri also commented on Marco Cecchinato's success: "I know him better than anyone, I grew him up since there is an age difference. He is deserving all that he is doing. He serves so well, he hits such strong forehands, he covers the court like almost no other but just the 30% of the season is played on clay. People are like: "Oh, Cecchinato is No. 16!" But he is deserving it. We will see if he can crack the top ten."
In July just after Wimbledon, Volandri, who has been working as a head coach at the Italian Tennis Federation for a few years, revealed that Djokovic thought about retiring from professional tennis following last year's Miami Open loss to Benoit Paire.
