People want to see Federer, Djokovic, Nadal playing Davis Cup - Gonzalez

In a recent interview, the former world No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez commented on the new Davis Cup format. Marin Cilic, Rafael Nadal, Diego Schwartzman and David Goffin are all committed to play the event in November in Madrid. "I believe in changes in order to improve, but you have an important weight of history that hurts. However the people want to see Djokovic, Nadal and Federer, and with the old format they were very unlikely to play, now they will play and the Davis Cup will be hosted in some of the biggest cities in the world and the most little countries like our will earn money too", said Gonzalez.

On Marat Safin saying that the oldest players are dominating, because the Next Generation is not strong enough, Gonzalez added: "You obviously have a lot of good kids. Times changed and the players may mature later, but you clearly need to give a big credit to Nadal and Federer to keep being there. Now they are playing with players who are ten or 15 years younger and it's like they play with their idols, and Nadal and Federer keep winning a lot even without playing a lot."

Why does a country like Chile not have more players like Christian Garin and Nicolas Jarry? "Programmes and sports finance lack. Kids need to play sports in an easier way and without any complications to play any sport."

Gonzalez retired from tennis in the 2012 Miami Open. He has been working as a coach lately and he also played in the Wimbledon doubles legends draw last year.
