Recalling final vs Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych announces return in Madrid

On his Twitter account, Tomas Berdych revealed he got a main draw wild card invitation from the Madrid Open. The Czech player joins the Spaniards David Ferrer, who will play his last career-tournament here, and Jaume Munar. "Just spoke to the tournament director Feliciano Lopez and he just confirmed me a wild card. I am very glad to come to this great event, I have great memories playing this tournament, I played a final against Roger and other great memories so I am really looking forward to be back this year," said Berdych, who lost a three-set championship clash to the Swiss in 2012 on blue clay. The 32-year-old has made 14 appearances in Madrid also reaching three semi-finals in 2006, 2013 and 2015. Berdych lost to Richard Gasquet in the last year's first round. The Prague native enjoyed a healthy comeback this year after dealing with a back injury for months, losing to Roberto Bautista Agut in the Doha Open final and to Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open fourth round. Berdych last played an official match at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells losing to Feliciano Lopez.

Berdych praised Federer: "Well, it's really exceptional tennis player that we have, that our sport actually has right now. There was nobody better in the past. Yeah, I think he's the greatest of them all. It's a great challenge to have actually the opportunity to play him."
