Richard Gasquet sets comeback in the same event as Roger Federer

Richard Gasquet last played an official match at the last year's Paris Masters. The Frenchman hopes to be back to compete soon and he is set to make his return at next month's Madrid Open that takes place from 6 to 12 May. The Spanish event will mark Roger Federer's comeback to the clay courts for the first time since 2016 Rome.

After his hernia surgery on January 17, Gasquet had set his comeback to the Monte Carlo Masters that took place last week as a goal. "But once he started training with the Davis Cup French team in early April, he realized his body was not ready", said his agent Julien Casseigne. Gasquet is playing practice sets. "He will give himself all the chances to start again in the Madrid tournament", Casseigne added.

Gasquet recently said he doesn't care about being France's No. 1: "I've been No. 2 and among the top 10. So being the first French player, being ranked 24, 27 is nothing for me, really. Not that important. It's just an anecdote. It's not a good year for each and every one of us. So I do not draw any pleasure from this. I would rather be fourth and be ranked 12th. I would rather be the third French player and have many more French players being among the top players."

The 32-year-old is 30th ranked, he once achieved a career-high at No. 7 in 2007. We will see how his comeback will be.
