Roger Federer would have won many French Opens without Nadal - Moya
In an interview to ATP es, Rafael Nadal's coach Carlos Moya commented on the Roger Federer's chances in the clay-court season. The Swiss is set to make his comeback on the surface for the first time since 2016 Rome. The 42-year-old said: "You have to see his definitive calendar. So far it's Madrid and French Open, which are the tournaments that fit his conditions the most, especially the first one. Madrid is a quicker tournament, in the altitude, where you can hit two shots. And the French Open is at five sets, you will have to see how the first rounds go and if he gets tired. He is a player who would have won the French Open many times if there wasn't Nadal. Federer played several finals on clay and he always struggled against Rafa. It's a very natural surface for him and he will definitely play well. He will try to be aggressive like he did lately, although the risk is much bigger."
On Alexander Zverev, Moya added: "Now the top players compete well on all the surfaces. Zverev is one of them. He is very good on hard, but on clay too. He may give you more time on clay and this year he is yet to reach his best level. He is a young player who sooner or later will have several good weeks and will get involved in the fifth again."
Nadal can earn points during the clay season only in the Madrid Open where he reached the quarter-finals last year losing to Dominic Thiem. He features as a defending champion in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome and French Open.
