Sloane Stephens: It was a tough day, and I was just happy to get through

Former Champion and top seed at the event – Sloane Stephens moved into Round 3 of the Volvo Car Open following a very tricky match against Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain. The American was tested in both sets by the Spaniard, but Stephens eventually came out the winner 7-6(4), 7-6(4).

“It was a tough day, and I was just happy to get through," Stephens said, during her post-match press conference. "Obviously a lot of different factors, but just happy with the fight and happy that I was able to get through."

In a match lasting for over two and a half hours, it was the American’s experience that helped her progress over the World No.78 in two extremely close sets.

Kiki Bertens on the other hand had a relatively easy outing as she dismantled Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan to reach the second round, 6-2, 6-1.

“It's always tough for the first match on clay," Bertens said after the match. "In the beginning, I was searching for the rhythm and not putting too much on the ball. From there, I started playing a little bit more aggressive, and in the end, I was happy with my game."

She further added, It was really tough today, I guess everyone was struggling with the cold and also the ball was not bouncing so much. From 2-all, I think I played some good tennis. When I started playing more aggressive, I saw she was struggling with the movement and I hit some more winners. Also, I think my serve was much better than hers."
