Wawrinka: 'This year I have faced great players like Roger Federer again'
Stan Wawrinka started his clay-court season at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he fell short in the second round agains Marco Cecchinato. The Swiss player reflected on his comeback process in an interview to Tages Anzeiger. "In 2018 I was still going through a building stage, I was never at the top. Only from the preparation of last winter I really felt well again. And from then, results were more or less okay. I suffered bad losses but the puzzle is getting together again. I could face great players again like Roger Federer in Indian Wells and that's why I won less tournaments, so my confidence didn't increase. But I feel like I am very close to achieving something great again. I do not know if in the clay-court season, in summer or autumn. It was always like this with me. I work hard, I do the right things, but sometimes results do not immediately follow. I think that in the second half of the year I will play even better if I do not have setbacks and I keep like this. Then I have six months and many matches ahead of me and I will be ranked higher. Being on Sunday with the trophy would be just a dream. I would like to experience it again. In Rotterdam, I lost the final. But the most important thing is what mentality you have in your daily work", said Wawrinka.
Novak Djokovic said that a player should make a comparison between the one he was prior to an injury and after. "I cannot compare myself to how I was before. I am a new player. That does not mean I am less strong. But only that I have to find another way to get my best level. And tennis got developed as well. Roger is not the same player today as he was three years ago. Not just because of his injuries, but also the evolution of the sport. And since the age influences, you have to use it in other aspects."
