Week 14: it is time for the clay season!
The 14th week of the 2019 tennis season, which coincides with the 1st day of April, officially opens the season on clay courts. After leaving behind the emotions of Indian Wells and the Miami Open, the WTA and the ATP tour are preparing to land in Europe, in the mid of April. The season on clay courts will culminate at the beginning of June with the 118th edition of the French Open.
Meanwhile, this week, before arriving in the Old Continent, two WTA events will be played: the Volvo Car Open 2019, in Charleston (USA) and the Monterrey Open 2019 (Mexico). In the first tournament, (WTA Premier with prize money of 823 000 $, played on green clay courts - ed.) Sloane Stephens leads the draw. With her, there will be many more stars on the court: Caroline Wozniacki, Belinda Bencic, Julia Goerges, Kiki Bertens, Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka.
In Mexico (WTA International with prize money of $ 250,000, on hard courts), Angelique Kerber will be seed no. 1. With her, Garbine Muguruza, Victoria Azarenka and Kristina Mladenovic. It will be the last WTA event on hard-courts until the Summer on the American Hard Courts.
The first taste of the clay swing and last (for now) of the hard-courts swing, will be this, with many protagonists on the courts, who are looking for points and prestigious victories. The ATP Tour guys will come back on the court on April 8th, with the tournaments in Houston and Marrakech, then move to Europe for the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters.
This week there will be also three ATP Challengers, in Alicante (Spain, on clay courts), in Monterrey (Mexico, on hard courts) and in Sophia Antipolis (France, on clay courts).
