WTA Lugano: Ferro, Hercog and Kudermetova beat rain and rivals
The organizers of the Samsung Open in Lugano have been dealing with rain since the very first day, having to change the schedule a few times and with just three matches completed on Wednesday. World no. 108 Fiona Ferro defeated the 4th seed Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 39 minutes to reach the quarters, saving seven out of nine break chances and securing four breaks from nine opportunities to seal the deal in straight sets. The French player claimed the opener with a break in game ten, gathering the momentum before set number two where she saved three break points at 2-2 to remain on the positive side of the scoreboard.
She earned a break in game eight that pushed Alison on the verge of defeat, although the Belgian managed to break back and prolong the encounter. It wasn't to be for the higher-ranked player, though, suffering another break in game 12 to push Fiona through in their first meeting on the Tour. Another player who secured the place in the last eight is Polona Hercog who toppled Sorana Cirstea 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes, with the Romanian serving for the match at 6-3, 6-5. The Slovenian broke back in the very last moment to set the tie break that she won 7-0, setting up a decider where she won 12 points in a row from 4-3 down to complete the comeback and book the place in the quarters.
In the first round encounter, Veronika Kudermetova ousted Jil Teichmann 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 in two hours and 33 minutes, saving two match points and scoring seven breaks and coming from a double break down in the decider to cross the finish line first. Teichmann raced into a 4-1 lead in the third set with breaks in games one and five, losing the next three games to bring the Russian back to 4-4. Kudermetova got broken at love in the ninth game and had to fend off two match points on the return in the following game, reaching a tie break that she won 7-2 to steal the triumph and move into the last 16.
