WTA Monterrey: Pavlyuchenkova serves double bagel! Flipkens and Vickery win
The four-time Monterrey champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is through to the quarter-final at one of her favorite events after a dominant 6-0, 6-0 triumph over the young Serb Ivana Jorovic in 50 minutes! As the result suggests, the Russian had the upper hand in every segment, losing nine points on serve and fending off both break points to mount the pressure on Ivana who couldn't endure it. With no rhythm on the return or in the service games, Jorovic lost the opener in less than 25 minutes, suffering three breaks of serve and failing to change things on the court in set number two as well despite a little bit stronger effort.
Anastasia saved those two break points in game four and continued to deliver one good return game after another, storming over the young rival and securing the place in the last eight in no time at all. The 6th seed Kirsten Flipkens joined her there following a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dalila Jakupovic in an hour and 18 minutes, saving four out of five break points and doing enough damage on the return to seal the deal in straight sets. Serving at only 47%, Dalila lost almost half of the points behind the initial shot and gave serve away four times from eight opportunities she offered to the Belgian to end her run in the second round.
Kirsten repelled four break points in the opening game of the match, moving ahead with a break in game six and closing the opener with a hold at 5-3 after wasting a set point on the return in the previous game. Flipkens raced into a 5-1 lead in set number two with a double break, playing a loose service game while serving for the victory at 5-2 before sealing the deal with another break in game nine. The 8th seed Magdalena Rybarikova needed two and a half hours to oust Stefanie Voegele 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, repelling nine out of 11 break points to control the scoreboard after the opener.
Landing under 50% of the first serve in, Voegele gave her best to stay in touch although it wasn't enough for an overall win, losing serve four times, dropping seven straight games from 2-2 in the second set to open a 3-0 lead in the decider that she successfully carried home for the place in the last eight. In the longest match of the day and one of the most extended of the season so far, Sachia Vickery prevailed against Nao Hibino 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 in two hours and 50 minutes, winning two points more than her rival in the encounter with mind-blowing 44 break points!
Vickery hit ten double faults but found the way to cross the finish line first, saving nine out of 18 break points and converting nine from 26, allowing Hibino to serve for the match at 6-5 in the decider before breaking back and wrapping up the triumph 7-5 in the tie break.
