Melbourne Park is ready for the final stage of $972 million upgrade

From an outdated and smallest Major out of the four most significant tennis events in the world, the Australian Open has passed a long journey in the last 30 years to become the tournament with the most advanced facilities, with no intentions of stopping anytime soon! Opened in 1998, Melbourne Park is the state of art complex that includes more than 40 courts, including Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Arena and the refurbished Margaret Court Arena, all equipped with retractable roofs! In the last ten years, the organizers have invested a tremendous amount of money in upgrading the complex and making it even more enjoyable for both the players and fans, with the third $271.5 million stage phase in redevelopment about to begin at the first Grand Slam of the season.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula joined Minister for Priority Precincts Gavin Jennings on Wednesday to inspect demolition works ahead of the construction of a new function and media center. The Government has invested $972 million upgrading Melbourne Park to ensure the Australian Open remains in Melbourne until at least 2036 and well beyond that date, with Stage 3 redevelopment including new function and media center, interview rooms, a 200-seat auditorium and broadcast studios and the construction of a new multi-purpose 5,000-seat sunken show court arena and a central logistics hub.

“Melbourne is the sporting and events capital of Australia and we maintain that title by continuing to invest in the best facilities, venues and infrastructure with projects like the Melbourne Park redevelopment. We’re getting on with making the home of sport and entertainment even better and by doing so we’re creating thousands of jobs and bringing tens of thousands of visitors right here to Victoria,” said Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula.
