Alex de Minaur confident he has got game for clay

Rising Australian star Alex de Minaur ends his 2019 clay season confident he has got the game for the slowest surface despite an early French Open exit. 

The 20-year-old stood no chance against former world No. 10 Pablo Carreno Busta as the Spaniard lost just five games 6-3 6-1 6-1 on his way to reaching the third round. 

Carreno Busta, now ranked at No. 57 in the world, broke de Minaur in the opening game of the match and in the ninth game to claim the opener. 

The Spaniard then broke the Australian twice in the second set and three times in the third set respectively to earn a dominant straight-set win. 

"I do feel like I've got the game to play on clay," de Minaur said post-match, per AAP and Tennis Australia. 

"The great thing about it all is there is a lot of improvement to be done … there's a huge gap. It probably would be a good thing if I bulk up a little, but that’s all in the plan." 

De Minaur kicked off his clay season at the Estoril Open, where he returned to competitive action after being sidelined for a month and 20 days because of a groin issue. 

"A lot will change, hopefully, no more injuries, a stronger body and I'll become a little bit of a claycourter," de Minaur added.
