ATP Munich: Garin downs Schwartzman. Cecchinato and Fucsovics reach QF

The 22-year-old Chilean Christian Garin has been on a constant rise in recent months, standing outside the top-200 at this time last year and working hard on his game to settle into the elite 100 in the previous six months. Christian has scored the 16th win of the season thanks to a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over the 6th seed Diego Schwartzman in an hour and 24 minutes, losing serve twice but holding the strings of the match firmly in his hands. Schwartzman fought well in set number two although it wasn't to be for him, getting broken six times from 12 chances he gave to the youngster.

Christian was in the zone right from the start, rattling off six straight games for a 6-1, trailing 4-2 in set number two before winning five of the next six games to avoid the tie break and seal the deal in straight sets. Garin pulled the break back in game eight and wasted three match points on the return in game ten before grabbing the crucial break at 6-5 that pushed him into the last eight. The 3rd seed Marco Cecchinato has recovered from an illness that halted his Budapest participation, beating Martin Klizan 6-1, 6-3 in 65 minutes after proving to be too strong on both serve and return.

Cecchinato gave away ten points on the return, taking 46% of the points behind Klizan's initial shot and earning four breaks from nine opportunities to move over the top. Marco barely lost a point in the opener as everything worked great for him, securing breaks in games two and six for a 6-1, rattling off the last four games to cross the finish line first and stay on the title course. In the longest match of the day, the 8th seed Marton Fucsovics survived another marathon, prevailing against Thiago Monteiro 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 36 minutes. The Hungarian lost serve only once from three chances and delivered three breaks from ten opportunities, leaving the opener behind him and playing better in sets two and three.
