David Goffin difficulties have no end, not even on clay courts
Long gone are the days when David Goffin entered the top-10 of the ATP ranking and played the best season of his career. It was 2017, and the Belgian, winner of two titles and finalist at the ATP Finals in London, played fantastic tennis that year, for a total of 5 finals played.
Then in 2018, his descending parabola began. A complicated journey also due to the numerous injuries that Goffin had to face. The Belgian has entered an endless crisis, which currently seems to have no way out. Last season he faced many problems, which relegated him to a marginal role in the ATP Tour. But even in 2019, the situation did not improve.
Goffin started the season at the Australian Open, where he was eliminated in the third round by Daniil Medvedev and, subsequently, he lost in the second round of the Open South de France against Serbian Filip Krajinovic. At the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, he was defeated in the first round by Gael Monfils, while at the Open 13 Provence he reached the semifinal, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Between Indian Wells and Miami the Belgian returned to play an ATP Challenger, in Phoenix, Arizona, losing to the Italian Salvatore Caruso. In the first two Masters 1000 of the season, he reached the second round (in California) and the fourth round (in Florida). Even the comeback to his beloved clay-courts, for now, has not produced positive results: second round in Monte Carlo (defeat against Dusan Lajovic) and the second round Barcelona (defeat against Jan-Lennard Struff).
The talent that Mother Nature has given to Goffin has never been supported by an important physical structure and the Belgian often suffers against opponents much more lent than him. The general feeling is that, after a 2017 full of satisfactions, but also of great efforts, the Belgian physicist suffered from the great efforts, and this was seen in 2018 and, partly, also this season.
Months during which he was targeted by physical problems, in addition to which, it must be said, he is expressing the worst tennis of his career. Will it be able to reverse this trend in the coming months?
