Francesca Schiavone Launches Initiative to Unearth Talent in Italy

Tennis - Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone has combined forces with the Municipality of Milan to launch an initiative called "You Can Try" which will help children to play tennis. As the former player stated, "the initiative will let children play tennis for free, with a scholarship going to the most promising player for the next two years. For two weekends, those of 18-19 and 25-26, May the four municipal circles of the Lombardy capital will be open to all children between 8 and 12 who can play tennis without paying any cost. Schiavone will be following their progress and will choose the player to whom a two-year scholarship will be awarded, which will cover all the main costs to give it the opportunity to continue his/ her tennis activity in the best possible way. They range from registration to the club closest to the players' home to technical material, provided by the two sponsors of the initiative, namely Sergio Tacchini and Babolat. 

The 38-year-old Schiavone won the 2010 French Open singles title, becoming the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam event in singles. She also reached the finals at the 2011 French Open and peaked at No. 4 in the rankings. She has also been a part of the Fed Cup winning team in 2006, 2009 and 2010. She retired from the sport in September 2018 and is currently working with Caroline Wozniacki during the clay court season as her coach.
