Bob Brett on Working with Young Japanese Players

Tennis - Famed tennis coach Bob Brett says he does not miss his previous career where he worked with some of the top tennis stars and is enjoying his new stint where he worked with young players in the age group of 12 to 14. In an interview published on Ubitennis, Brett when asked if he misses coaching says, "No, because what I really love to do is work so that the players can improve and above all with the young Japanese I tried to do this. I aimed to raise their level, as it was fairly uniform, and I think they have now greatly improved the network approach with the result of having a completely different type of game than they had previously.

Speaking about the current crop of players in the game, Brett, who had earlier coached the likes of Boris Becker and Goran Ivanisevic, comments, "I think it depends on many factors that the next gen can emerge. Previously the game was more focused on trajectories, drop shots and other things, while nowadays there is a greater tendency to remain on the baseline and to hit hard to gain winning shots. These days I was just thinking that this is a very positive way of playing tennis because it gives the opportunity to develop other tennis qualities and I think it is very important for future generations, especially from the point of view of the visual spectacle.

Besides liking Stefanos Tsisipas or Daniil Medvedev from the current lot, Brett also has nice things to say about the young Australian Alex de Minaur, "I saw him play. He played very well deserving to get to the ranking of No. 24. He is an excellent runner, he could have a more proactive game, without necessarily having to force, but simply placing better shots in different parts of the field, so that his game is not just defensive. I think his style could benefit from adding more variations."
