French Television to Trial 8K over 5G at French Open
Tennis - The Tennis Grand Slams are continuing to make inroads into new technology with the French Open tournament unveiling plans to demonstrate the latest in technology at its 2019 edition starting later this month.
According to Advanced Television, French PSB France Télévisions will stream more than 100 hours live in 8K technology over 5G in partnership with broadband company Orange. These will include matches from the main Philippe-Chatrier centre court. More than 100 hours of live content will be produced for airing the same live over satellite and VOD.
There will be 17 cameras on the main Philippe Chatrier Court and 14 cameras on the Suzanne Lenglen Court capturing the tennis. The company is also looking at augmented reality.
In recent weeks, the tennis majors have announced tie-ups with technology companies. The French Open also recently announced an agreement with Vivo to provide an OTT service in Brazil for the tournament. Wimbledon has also announced a partnership with OPPO to become the official smartphone-maker of the tournament.
Roland Garros is one of the four Grand Slam events on the tennis calendar and takes place in Paris every year. The tournament runs from May 26 to June 9th this year. Rafael Nadal, from Spain, is the defending champion on the men's side and Simona Halep, of Romania, is the defending champion on the women's side. This year will also see the return of Roger Federer to the Paris clay courts for the first time since 2015. The Swiss legend did not play the last few years to give his body some rest but has decided to play this year as he feels fit enough.
