I got emotional looking at packed crowd for Federer-Sonego, says Berrettini
Matteo Berrettini defeated Pablo Andujar in four sets to reach the second round. In a press conference, the Italian said: "I struggled for the entire match even if the third set was a bit better. Luckily I managed to go through with my best weapons, serve and forehand and getting back in a match that was becoming complicated. I am satisfied just about it: that's the goal I set with my team, winning even when I do not play at my best."
On how different his approach to the tournament is compared to the previous years, Berrettini added: "Expectations are obviously different, the bar got higher and there is more pressure. But if you want to go even higher, that's part of the game. Compared to a year ago, I grew in tennis and mentality. I was smart in the key moments of the match and I was facing an experienced player. Also, the best of five sets tennis is different."
Berrettini will now face the Norvegian Casper Ruud. Then he could meet Roger Federer in the third round. "At the moment I am focused on my next match, but I definitely look at the draw. Today I got emotional seeing Lorenzo Sonego playing in front of a packed Central Court facing Federer. Those are unique emotions."
Before the match against Federer, Sonego had said: "For me it's a lifetime dream. I got close to it in last year's Australian Open and unfortunately it did not happen. I grew up watching him play on TV and until two years ago I did not even hope for it, I thought it was an Impossible dream. It's a honor to see him on the other side of the court. I tried hitting on his backhand, making him move and do not let him lead the rallies. He does not like to run from one side to the other."
