Lyon to Host New WTA Event in 2020

Tennis - According to the French website Radio Scoop, the city of Lyon could host a new WTA Tournament in either February or March 2020 which would be held at the Palais des Sports Gerland. French No. 1 player Caroline Garcia. who is from the city of Lyon, is expected to headline the event in its inaugural edition. The tournament is likely to be held on a fast surface in the first quarter of the calendar year.

The 25-year-old Garcia is currently ranked No. 22 in the world. She has been ranked as high as No. 4 in the world last year. France currently has 5 women in the WTA Top 100 and the tournament should be a significant boost to the players in the region. Other French players in the Top 100 include Alize Cornet at No. 54, Kristina Mladenovic at No. 64, Pauline Parmentier at No. 69 and Fiona Ferro at No. 90 in the world.

Currently, Lyon has already been hosting an ATP tournament every year since 2017 called the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes - the third edition of which will take place at the Parc de la Tete d'Or from 18th May to 25th May this year. Among the players expected to play the tournament this year are Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, American John Isner, Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Three weeks later, the 4th edition of the Open Sopra Steria ATP Challenger event is going to be held at the Tennis Club de Lyon with Frenchman Benoît Paire and Spain's Pablo Andujar among those expected to play.
