Maria Sharapova will not play Rome Open due to ongoing injury

Maria Sharapova will not play the Rome Open that takes place from 6 to 19 May. The 32-year-old Russian has been dealing with a shoulder injury since late January, she underwent a small procedure in March but she has not recovered yet. Sharapova has withdrawn from Stuttgart and Madrid tournaments as well, and her appearance in the French Open seems to be in jeopardy.

Sharapova has won the Rome Open thrice, in 2011, 2012 and 2015. Just in Rome last year she played one of her best events in the season, winning four matches, including a fascinating three-set quarter-final against the then-defending champion Jelena Ostapenko, and losing only to Simona Halep in the semis. Viktoria Kuzmova will replace her in the main draw. Sharapova is currently in the United States, combining rehabilitation and on-court training. We will see if she will be able to come back in Paris, otherwise, her return could happen during the grass season. Last year she was committed to Birmingham prior to Wimbledon, but she was forced to withdraw.

The Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport shared a list including the ten most beautiful athletes in the world. Among them, there is the five-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova, the former top-five player Eugenie Bouchard and the Italian Camila Giorgi.

The Italian swimmer Federica Pellegrini, the basketball player Anthony Tinsel, the biathlon competitor Dorothea Winter, Carolina Kostner, American football player Alex Morgan, American skier Lindsey Vonn. This year Sharapova played three tournaments - Shenzhen, Australian Open and St. Petersburg. She has been dealing with a shoulder injury for months and she has withdrawn from Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Madrid. We will see if Sharapova will be able to compete in Rome and the French Open.
