Michael Chang on French Open: It always brings fond memories
Former American tennis star Michael Chang admits the French Open is a special place for him.
Playing in only his fifth Grand Slam event, the American won his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open exactly 30 years ago in 1989 after beating Ivan Lendl in the final.
Chang, now a tennis coach, every year returns to the place where he won his first and only Grand Slam title.
The American reached two more Grand Slam finals but ended runner-up at the Australian Open and US Open in 1996.
"It's a special place for me and the reception that I get there is very warm, regardless of whether I’m coaching or I'm playing, it always brings back fond memories," Chang exclusively told The Guardian.
Chang's goal is now to help Japanese tennis star and his pupil Kei Nishikori win his maiden Grand Slam title.
Nishikori, 29, has underlined several times that his goal is to win Grand Slam title before he retires.
The Japanese made the quarter-final at Roland Garros in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
It remains to be seen can Nishikori make a splash at Roland Garros this year.
