Roger Federer: 'Enjoy the clay, do not find excuses'

In an interview to Sky Sport, Roger Federer gave three tips on how to play on clay. The Swiss played five French Open finals winning one in 2009 by defeating Robin Soderling in the final. "You got to enjoy the clay courts. If you always think that clay has a bad bounce, that it's windy, you will never be happy on the clay. So having a positive mindset is number one. Number two is good footwork. If you can slide and hit and vice-versa, and using the drop shot to break the effect if you can. Two-three big shots and then hit a drop shot to surprise your opponent."

On how to hit a perfect slice backhand, Federer added: "For me, it starts with a good punch to the ball, and not just a slow movement, there should be some acceleration into the ball. Point two: don't come from too high up and then stay across, try to maybe stay on the ball level as you punch through the ball. And the legs obviously, you try to be as low as possible, so you have the best balance. And then you want to be strong in the elbow, as you punch through. The ball comes from here... BAM!"

Alex Corretja spoke about Garbine Muguruza's French Open chances: "I've been watching her, she's practising hard, been in the gym a lot. One thing about Muguruza is when she's in good shape she can win any tournament in the world. When she hits her peak she’s so dangerous because she moves well. She knows the clay, she has already won there, so I think the first few rounds for her will be very important to build up her confidence. Not too many people are going to talk about her at the beginning. I think she will be able to go a long way without people talking about her... I think that."
