Roger Federer: 'Every seat was taken in the house for my first match'
In an interview to Tennis Channel, Roger Federer commented on his comeback to the French Open for the first time since 2015. The Swiss player defeated Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets and after the match, he said: "Every seat was taken in the house as I walked out, you could see that also yesterday it was the same for my practice, Rafa and Novak too, crowds were already full and they were chanting the name. It was 20 years since my first appearance, 10 years since my first win, four years missing Paris, it's a big deal for Paris and me too."
Analyzing his win Federer added: "It was a great start, going up a double break is wonderful if it would always happen. And the same thing in the second set, it just sets the tone and how you can play the rest of the set. I thought Sonego started to play the match a little bit better as the match went on, nerves went away a little bit, he missed a few shots at the beginning of the match which cost him quite a lot but I felt great, I was serving well, moving well, especially against a guy who I never played against, it was a really good first round."
On why he often stayed on the baseline, Federer explained: "It's just a way I played on the hard and grass courts in the last two or three years, that makes you want to do that more often as maybe as well on the clay, that might be a good thing, we will find out."
