Sam Stosur: If Asheigh Barty needs advice, I’m here

Former French Open finalist Samantha Stosur recently spoke about fellow Australian Ash Barty, saying that if she needs any advice or help, Stosur will be there.

Having progressed till at least the Third Round at Roland Garros for the last decade, Stosur surely knows her way around the Paris clay. While Barty is yet to go beyond the Quarter Finals at a Grand Slam, Stosur is not in a hurry to mentor Barty, saying she knows best about her game.

“If she ever asked I’d be willing to help of course, but when you’ve got your team around you too many voices aren’t necessarily ideal,” Stosur said. “If she needs advice I’m there but she’s quality; she knows tennis better than anyone tactically and technically. Over the past years she’s never looked at the clay as favourable, but I hope that starts to change.”

Stosur will play world No. 58 Ekatarina Alexandrova, while Barty meets Australian Open semi-finalist Danielle Collins. Stosur admitted to not knowing much about her Russian rival but has been around long enough to know what to expect. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re No. 1 or 67 — if you’re winning matches you’re not easy to beat in tournaments like this,” she said.

She ended by saying, “At the end of the day, everyone’s good so it doesn’t really matter if you’re playing the last person in the draw.”
