Priscilla Hon: Madison Keys is one of the best
Wildcard entrant at the French Open - Priscilla Hon has reached the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career, becoming the Third Australian behind Sam Stosur and Ash Barty to reach Round 2 at the second major of the year.
The 21-year-old rising star defeated Hungarian TÃmea Babos in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to move into Round 2. This was Hon’s third time in the main draw at a major, with her two previous being at the Australian Open in 2016 and 2019.
She next takes on World No.14 Madison Keys for a place in the Third Round. "I was getting frustrated, I've been ranked around here (top 100) but at big tournaments, I hadn't been getting wins," Hon said. "She's (Keys) one of the best so I'm excited to see what I can do against her."
Fellow Australians Daria Gavrilova and Alja Tomljanovic faced contrasting fortunes at the French Open, losing their first-round matches. Tomljanovic put up a brave fight against defending champion Simona Halep, eventually losing to the Romanian 2-6, 6-3, 1-6 in a tight match.
Gavrilova had to retire in the second set after she called for a trainer to work on a heavily strapped thigh. She was down a set after Serbian Aleksandra Krunic took the first 6-3.
Gavrilova is also set to take the court with Greek star Maria Sakkari.
