Roger Federer: 'Younger guys will push us out of the game'
In an interview to the Roland Garros YouTube Channel, Roger Federer gave his thoughts on the next generation of players. The Basel native said: "It's very exciting, some guys have left and some guys have gone. There is a new strong generation coming through right now obviously with the likes of Karen Khachanov, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev has been around for a while now, Nick Kyrgios too, Denis Shapovalov, Auger-Aliassime, so it's been exciting and it will be a quite exciting French Open even more next year and the year after when they will push more and more all the guys out of the game which is totally fine."
Federer also recalled his 2009 French Open final win over Robin Soderling: "I remember I think I went through the line at 5-4 maybe serving for the match, I already had tears in my eyes because I felt like, Oh my god, I think I am going to win it now, two sets to love and 5-4 up in the third, I am playing great, but then the last point I hit the forehand, he shook a bit and I was running forward and I thought this is not coming over the net, you realize there is no more next point or next year, it's just pure joy and celebration, that's when I got sunk to my knees and I got emotional right away and the ovation is just insane."
The Basel native is enjoying both Monday and Tuesday off with his family and he will be back competing on Wednesday against the German Oscar Otte.
