Serena Williams: 'French Open withdrawal crossed my mind every day'
Serena Williams is having a very short clay season. The American played one match in Rome and she is now in the French Open where she opened her run with a win over Vitalia Diatchenko on Monday. In a press conference, the 23-time Grand Slam winner admitted she thought about skipping the second calendar Grand Slam of the year. "It crossed my mind every day, but I'm here. And to do the best that I can do", said Serena.
The 37-year-old also commented on Nike increasing its support for pregnant women: "I believe that in the past people don't perceive women athletes and having babies at the same time as they can still be athletes. I feel like as time goes on, as technology changes and as, you know, the world changes, people realize that we have to change our policies. We have to look at old policies and change them. And I think that Nike wanted to do that, and they started doing that. And so I think they made a really bold statement by doing that with me, and I think they're going to -- I know, actually, that they're going to continue to make that statement."
Despite not playing too many matches lately, Serena believes she will be okay: "I have enough tennis in me. I have 30-something years' worth of tennis, so I'll be fine.
