Serena Williams is feeling something significant on knee, says analyst

The former world no. 6 Chanda Rubin commented on Serena Williams' withdrawal from the Rome Open. The 23-time Grand Slam winner has been dealing with a knee injury for months. "It's an injury that has been clearly ongoing for a while and it's tough once you get to the latter stage in your career when you struggle with injuries to stay on the court and particularly with a knee injury, and you are trying to make that transition onto the clay, it is not easy, it's more on the joints, more bending, more sliding. She went through Peterson so easily, so she is clearly feeling something significant because she has got an extra day she could have taken and she knew today it was not good enough," said Rubin.

Paul Annacone added: "She looked so sharp in the first match, so so many great expectations, so obviously really disappointed for the tournament, but in this time of your career you have got to be really careful because these little injuries can linger and linger, French Open is around the corner."

In press conference in Rome Serena, before her withdrawal, had said: "It's great. She's actually been here before. I was briefly here last year, but she was so small. It's really fun because I took her to the Coliseum, then I took her to the fountain. It was really cool to share my favorite city with her, some of my favorite things to see. Obviously the pasta and the food... It's just been really great."
