Stan Wawrinka asks for high appearance fee, doesn't commit to 2019 Geneva

Last year, the story about Stan Wawrinka not playing the Geneva Open due to lack of business agreement had made waves. The Swiss still played the tournament through a wild card but this time in a few weeks it will probably be different. Exclusively speaking to Tennis World USA, Tournament Director Thierry Grin said: "Stan was the ambassador of the tournament in 2016 and 2017 and last year we have not found an economical agreement, he asked a wild card and he eventually played. This year it's the same situation, there is no economical agreement found but the Tournament owners are Ion Tiriac and Rainer Schuttler so they are in negotiations and they are close to the players including Wawrinka."

Gerard Tsobanian is the Geneva Open and Madrid Open organizer and Grin revealed he congratulated him on getting Roger Federer: "He is the right hand of Ion Tiriac. Of course they are very happy that Federer has decided to include Madrid on his calendar.

Fabio Fognini will be one of the main stars. Asked if he expects the Italian to win the title, Grin replied: "Of course! We like him a lot, we like his game, he is a great clay-court player and hopefully he can win the tournament."

Wawrinka feels confident about his future: "I hope it is going to click soon. I'm patient enough to know that sometimes it takes time. I do believe that I'm playing well, I'm feeling well on the court and I still have some big result inside me so hopefully it can come sooner than later," the Lausanne native concluded.
