Toni Nadal: 'Gluten free diet doesn't make Novak Djokovic win matches'

In a conference call, Rafael Nadal's uncle Toni commented on how excuses and external things can influence a player's career. For Toni, tennis is the priority. "You have biomecanics studies, statistics, the forehand, video analysis, eating regimes... How did Maradona, Messi and Ronaldinho eat? Did they do the same? We live in a world featuring just numbers, and we lose the focus on what's essential. Rafael grew up and played for many years with three thoughts. Hit as strong as possible. If you can, where the opponent is not and that ends up inside the court.

Now Rafael is more careful about eating. But I do not care about it. They spoke a lot about Djokovic changing his eating regime, he was eating gluten free, and now he is No. 1. I was surprised that his coach would focus on what he ate and not his game. The gluten did not make Djokovic win a match."

He made another example: "In tennis, you play with six rackets. When Rafael was 15-16 years old, his agent Carlos Costa noted that all his rackets were different. How can you play with all the different rackets? From there we started having problems, until then nothing. Now even the colour affects you."

In an interview, Jaume Munar was asked how he sees a potential match between him and Nadal in the Madrid Open. The 22-year-old said: "That moment would be very special! And a rare one as well... Sharing the court sometimes with Rafa is something that went through my mind many times since when I was a kid. We have a close relationship and that would be a unique moment. It will be different feelings that I will remember forever."
