Vasek Pospisil works at Janko Tipsarevic Academy, hoping to return on grass
The 28-year-old Canadian Vasek Pospisil had caught the attention of the tennis world back in 2014 when he won Wimbledon doubles crown with Jack Sock, becoming world no. 4 a year later and having a chance to compete for some of the biggest doubles titles on the Tour. Focusing on his singles career from 2017, Vasek had played just 19 ATP doubles matches in the last two years, establishing himself in the top-100 on the singles list after reaching four Challenger finals in 2018, winning two titles and 29 matches overall. Pospisil also played in the third round of Miami Masters and the quarter-final of Newport and Antwerp for eight ATP wins overall, looking for even better run in 2019 and the ranking position he had in 2013 and 2014.
After that solid week in Antwerp, Vasek lost in the qualifying round of Basel and Paris, retiring against Benoit Paire in the French capital due to back pain after the opening set tie break. Still sidelined from the court in the offseason, Vasek received cortisone shots to ease the pain and start training which didn't happen, having to miss the start of 2019 and the entire Australian swing! On January 18, Pospisil was forced to undergo surgical microdiscectomy to repair a herniated disk in New York and he needed two and a half months to start hitting again at the beginning of April, working on physical strength and making return plans.
After training at home in Canada, Vasek is currently at Janko Tipsarevic Academy in Serbia (Janko and Vasek share coach) and should return in June during the grass swing. The Canadian is ranked 138th and he would gain points if he makes a solid comeback, taking only 55 points in June and July last year.
