World no. 4 Angelique Kerber joins Kei Nishikori at Hawaii Open in December

World no. 4 and the three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber has been preparing for Madrid Open at her Angie Kerber Tennis Academy, hoping to bounce back after the quarter-final loss in Stuttgart two weeks ago. For the last two years, Kerber would have opened the season at Hopman Cup in Perth together with Alexander Zverev, losing both finals against Switzerland and delivering some impressive tennis, including all four singles wins in the latest campaign this January.

With Hopman Cup being done and dusted at the moment due to the arrival of brand new ATP Cup, Kerber had to find the new way to prepare for 2020 season and she decided to join Kei Nishikori at Hawaii Open Tennis Tournament between December 27-29 in Honolulu. Presented by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Hawaii Open gathered both male and female players for the first time last December when 12 players fought for the titles, including Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Ryan Harrison, Mackenzie McDonald, Garbine Muguruza, Elise Mertens, CoCo Vandeweghe and Eugenie Bouchard. Kei Nishikori and Elise Mertens were the champions and the Japanese will return to Hawaii this December to defend the crown, together with the reigning Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber who will make a debut at Hawaii Open. The German is yet to win a title in 2019, losing to Bianca Andreescu in the final at Indian Wells and the semis in Doha and Monterrey.

“I’m excited to visit Hawaii for the first time and compete in the Hawaii Open against other top players,” Kerber said. “It’s the perfect preparation for the upcoming season in one of the most beautiful destinations on earth. I have heard so many great things about the local community, the food, the culture and the beautiful nature with its world-famous beaches.”
