Confident Stan Wawrinka targeting deep French Open run

Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka  was happy to have pulled off his favorite shot in the crucial moments of his tough French Open third round clash against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov.

The 24th-seeded Swiss put an end to the clash with a one-handed backhand down the line as he claimed a 7-6 (5) 7-6 (4) 7-6 (8) win over the former world No. 3 on Court 1.

The two started their match on Friday as Wawrinka won the first two sets before it was postponed due to darkness.

“It’s (backhand down the line) always my favourite shot, let's put it this way. This was an important one, at an important moment, so I'm happy I did it again today,” Wawrinka said post-match, per the Roland Garros website. “Being on that court, which was full, and crazy, was something really special. For years I have played on No.1 and have no memory, but in these two days I have played a very special match that I will remember all my life.”

Before the Dimitrov challenge, Wawrinka demolished rising Chilean star Christian Garin 6-1 6-4 6-0.

“It was another great match after the run against [Christian] Garin. Against Grigor, it was a really tough battle. We both played well. I'm happy to have won the three tiebreaks. Today I saved some set points. I served for the match. It was an important victory for me,” Wawrinka added.

2015 French Open champion Wawrinka, who plays next against No. 6 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, has underlined that he targets to make a splash at Roland Garros.

“I'm happy to be in the round of 16, but it's not the aim of my tournaments when I enter. I'm not satisfied with this. I want to have more, and I hope to be able to do that on Sunday,” Wawrinka underlined.
