Experience was the key in Stan Wawrinka's win over Tsitsipas, says Corretja

The former world No. 2 Alex Corretja shared what was the key according to him in the match between Stan Wawrinka and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Swiss won it 8-6 in the fifth set. "I am just thrilled to see Wawrinka comeback in this match", said Corretja on Eurosport. "We needed a match like this. It's really important for him, he won because of the experience. He has been there so many times, he knows how to deal with those situations, Stefanos had 26 break points and he only converted five so that means he did not know how to play in these moments. Stan saved some energy at some point and in the end, he played so cleverly. Tsitsipas needs to get through these moments, Stan put a lot of pressure on the backhand, return and serve but at the end of the day it was about the emotions."

In a press conference, Wawrinka, a 2015 French Open winner and 2017 finalist, said: "My experience is such that I was able to keep my tennis and play well in the fifth set, but I don't think that made the difference. The difference was one centimetre, as I said earlier. But he could have won. He had a lot of opportunities. We know that he could have won the match and I would have been equally happy with the fight we led today. Unfortunately for him, I won, and we saw that the match point was on the line. We know it could have been out."
