Luthi would’ve preferred Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka meeting in final
Coach Severin Luthi says he would have preferred to see his pupil Roger Federer and three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka meet in the French Open final.
Federer, seeded at No. 3, and 2015 French Open champion Wawrinka are set to clash against each other in a blockbuster quarterfinal at Roland Garros.
Federer, playing in his first French Open since 2015, has been brilliant so far in his comeback as he clinched four straight-set wins over Lorenzo Sonego, Oscar Otte, Casper Ruud and Leonardo Mayer on his way to the quarter-final.
On the other side, Wawrinka defeated Josef Kovalik, Christian Garin and Grigor Dimitrov before he edged out sixth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in a five-hour and nine-minute marathon.
On his way to winning the 2015 French Open title, Wawrinka handed a straight-set defeat to Federer in the quarterfinal.
“Would have preferred Roger and Stan playin in the finals only, but it‘s of course super they both came that far already, happy that Stan found his form again, but again, it‘s not my preferred match set up, seeing those two playing against each other,” Luthi admitted, per SRF Sport.
