Dominic Thiem reacts to his first round win at Hamburg
World No. 4 Dominic Thiem insists he knew it wouldn't be easy against 47th-ranked Pablo Cuevas.
Thiem, seeded at No. 1 in the Hamburg main draw, made a good start to his third campaign at the German event.
The Austrian survived a tricky Hamburg first round meeting as he beat former world No. 19 Cuevas in straight sets 6-3 7-6 (3).
Thiem, 25, now leads the head-to-head against 33-year-old Cuevas 5-2.
"I expected a tough one today, as all of our previous matches were tough as well. I am happy to be through in two sets,” Thiem said post-match, as revealed on Tennis TourTalk. “The best point of the match was probably at 5-3 in the tie-break when I hit a backhand down the line. That was also an important winner.”
Thiem broke Cuevas early on to take a 3-0 lead and then routinely held on to his serve to win the opener.
The Austrian then started the second set with a break but got broken back immediately in the following game.
As no more breaks were seen -- the set went into a tie-break -- where Thiem converted his first match point to set up a round-of-16 meeting against Marton Fucsovics.
