Feliciano Lopez reacts to losing against Karen Khachanov at Wimbledon
Spanish tennis veteran Feliciano Lopez acknowledged that he paid the price for not realizing his chances against 10th-seeded Karen Khachanov as the Russian beat the Spaniard in four sets 4-6 6-4 7-5 6-4 to reach the third round at Wimbledon.
Khachanov broke back Lopez in the ninth game of the first set to reduce the deficit to 5-4 but then failed to serve out the 10th game as the Spaniard still won the opener.
Lopez was threatening to get an early break in the second set but failed to do as Khachanov saved four break points before breaking the Spaniard in the 10th game to level the match at a set a piece.
Khachanov came up big when needed most in the next set as well as he broke Lopez in the 12th game to take a 2-1 set lead.
Lopez broke back Khachanov when the Russian was serving for the match in the ninth game of the fourth set but then failed to hold on to his serve in the following game as the 10th-seed converted his fourth match point.
"I think that match was under control after winning the first set,” Lopez said post-match, per the ATP website. “[I] had a few chances [at the] beginning of the second set, two times 15/40 on his serve. [I] didn't make it. Then, I got broken two, three times today, just when I didn't have to get broken by the end of the set at 5-4. Then, to finish the match, also after getting the [service] break, playing great, saving match points in the last game… I didn't serve well enough, I think, in those moments, because I got broken two, three times at the end of the sets.”
