John Isner blames fitness for Kukushkin upset

The 2.08 meters tall John Isner was disappointed after losing the five-sets battle to Mikhail Kukushkin - 6/4, 6/7, 4/6, 6/1, 6/4 -, and blamed the foot problems that made him unable to train properly for Wimbledon.

Kukushkin showed his fighting spirit by turning the match around when Isner was leading two sets to one. John hit a high number of aces as usual – 34 -, but had a lot of unforced errors – 50 -, and that was the poison that made him lose his serve three times in the last two sets of the encounter.

After a spectacular run until the semifinals of last year’s Wimbledon, Isner was upset to lose in such an early stage: “It's very disappointing to lose.”

The American confessed that he was not well-enough prepared for Wimbledon, but also looked at the bright side of things: “I think my lack of preparation certainly showed today. I knew something like that was very possible. Unfortunately, that was the case today. The most important thing is my foot's fine. My fitness [is] definitely not there. There's no doubt. I was just able to put weight on my foot about 10 days before the tournament, so this is the first time I was able to put all my weight on my foot. It had been a long time on the shelf.”

Kukushkin’s next opponent will be Jan-Lennard Struff, who should put problems to the Kazakhstani player as he struck no less than 66 winners against Taylor Fritz.
