'Heirs of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic legacy are there'
In an interview to SN, the Mallorca Open Tournament Director Edwin Weindorfer commented on the WTA event that has been taking place in the Spanish island since 2015. "The development is satisfying. This year we got to around 20,000 fans. On Thursday it was all packed for the match between Angelique Kerber and Maria Sharapova. During the other days, there were still rooms for improvements."
Weindorfer admitted that attracting endorsements and fans is easier in an ATP event rather than WTA: "Although tennis is the strongest female sport in the world, WTA is less stronger than ATP in terms of earnings. That obviously depends on income from TVs or interesting sponsors. The problem with women is that the next generation of amazing players is not there. The generation after Serena Williams or Maria Sharapova. The heirs of Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal or Roger Federer are clearly there. Just look at Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas or Alexander Zverev."
Rafael Nadal could play in Mallorca that will probably host an ATP event on grass: "There is a good relationship with Rafa, as well as his uncle Toni who is the Tournament Director of the women's event. He feels very comfortable, almost every day he trains here and he also takes his time for fans."
