Jeremy Chardy reacts to win over good friend Richard Gasquet at Hamburg

France's Jeremy Chardy says he and fellow compatriot Richard Gasquet are good friends but they leave their friendship aside when they clash against each other.

Chardy, 32, edged out 33-year-old Gasquet 7-6 (5) 7-5 in the Hamburg round-of-16.

"It was really difficult today,” Chardy said in an on-court interview, per Tennis TourTalk. “Richard is a good player. We are good friends, having dinner together almost every night but when we step on the court it’s always a big fight. Conditions were tough today, as it’s hot and I didn’t really want to play a third set."

Chardy lost his serve in the opening game of the match but broke back Gasquet in the eighth game.

Gasquet saved a set point in the 12th game and two more in the tie-break but Chardy converted his fourth set point to win a tight opener.

Chardy then finished the job in straight sets after claiming the lone and crucial break of the second set in the 11th game.

Gasquet still leads the head-to-head as he now has a 5-3 record against Chardy.

World No. 77 Chardy will fight against defending champion Nikoloz Basilashvili for a place in the Hamburg semifinal.
