Nick Kyrgios hugged me after my emotional story, says Laslo Djere
In an interview, Laslo Djere recalled when he revealed his emotional story after winning the Rio Open earlier this year. The Serbian player went through both parents' death due to cancer. "I did not want to mention my parents during the prize ceremony, but I felt the responsibility to share my story. I felt strong enough to overcome their death and I hope to be an example for all the people who are going through tough moments. The reactions were surprising: Djokovic showed his support on Twitter while Kyrgios hugged me when he first saw me in Indian Wells. For all what I went through, it seems I am 50 years old but I am not the unluckiest person in the world", revealed Djere.
Recalling the tough times he went through, he added: "In my head, I was asking myself: 'Why is it happening? Why are things going like this?' The pain was there for weeks, months. It never totally goes away, to be honest. But I felt a big responsibility as my father was the boss in the family and I had to replace him. I had to be there. My father went through radio and chemotherapy. But nothing worked and in December 2018 at 55 years of age, he died. I am parentless at 23 years."
Djere opened his European clay-court swing on a good note reaching the Umag Open semifinals, where he lost to Attilo Balazs in straight sets on Saturday last week.
