Nick Kyrgios reveals his favorite to win Wimbledon
Ashleigh Barty is Australia’s main hope, as well as the overall tournament favourite according to her seed number and a wide range of insiders, to lift the 2019 Wimbledon singles trophy. Freshly winner of another Grand Slam -- she earned in early June the Roland Garros champion title against Marketa Vondrousova -- the Aussie breezed past Saisai Zheng in a quite comfortable way to start her evolution at the English Major. Publicly supported by celebrities, notably by countryman and tennis legend Rod Laver, the brand-new World No. 1 also seems to be one of her fellow Australian players’ favourite.
"Ash, what she's doing on the tennis court now is pretty special,” Nick Kyrgios declared, as reported by Jose Morgado on Twitter. “I actually told a lot of people that I thought she was going to win Wimbledon as well."
On her side, Barty remained quite reserved about her own evolution and expectations.
“The first round is always tough and I think it took a bit of time to get used to the conditions,” she confessed, before commenting on the second-round match that will oppose her Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck, “An exceptional challenge. Alison has a big game and is able to take it away from you on certain points. It will be important for me to look after my serve and work my way in.”
On top of the world -- despite having set a tennis hiatus in 2014 and switched to professional cricket in 2015 --, the 23-year-old now looks radiant and relatively comfortable with her place in the highest range of the ranking. She described what goes of her journey in Wimbledon by stating, “A privilege playing on one of the most gorgeous tennis courts in the world.”
“The crowd was awesome,” she added. “It was really nice to play in front of a pretty full crowd, on a court that I have so many good memories. I walked out there and was kind of fangirling for a minute. Just a beautiful court to start on.”
