Roger Federer is the greatest player ever, says Thiem's coach
In an interview to W Radio Colombia, the former top ten player Nicolas Massu spoke about Roger Federer's longevity. The Chilean said: "We shared many junior tournaments. He is one year younger than me. I first saw him at Queen's and he was already making a difference. He was also a great person, unbelievable player, and you could see he would have been different and someone who would have marked an era. Unbelievably, he is still playing. He faced my player Dominic Thiem in the Indian Wells final and he is still motivated. He is an example for kids and hopefully, he can be at the top as long as possible. In 2002 I beat him, then in 2006, he beat me. We shared many memories. He is the greatest player ever."
Recalling his loss to Andy Roddick in 2003, he added: "When you are in the world of tennis for many years, you have to get prepared to face the best players in the world. It was a great experience. The tour is complicated."
On how he became a coach, Massu concluded: "I retired in 2013. The Chilean tennis federation offered me to become the Davis Cup captain, I was 33 years old and tennis is my life. I was motivated to make the country's tennis grow and we made a long term plan."
Massu will play doubles with Thiem's brother Moritz at the upcoming Generali Open in Kitzbuhel. This will be the Chilean's return to competition while for the 19-year-old Austrian, this will be his debut in the professional tour.
