ATP Hamburg: Carreno Busta downs Fognini. Zverev overcomes Krajinovic

The 2nd seed and hometown favorite Alexander Zverev is through to his third semi-final of the season after a hard-fought 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Filip Krajinovic in two hours and 20 minutes. The Serb had everything in his hands, forging a 6-2, 5-2 advantage before fading from the court, allowing the German to take 11 of the last 13 games for an impressive escape and the place in the last four. Alexander won just two points moe in the end, struggling on the second serve and getting broken four times from five chances offered to Krajinovic who never lost serve before the ninth game of the second set when he served for the victory. Zverev broke to grab the control, delivering five breaks in total and marching towards the finish line with a strong performance in the decider, gathering tremendous momentum in the closing stages of the second set that carried him home.

Filip erased break points in the opening two service games, avoiding an early setback and settling into a fine rhythm after that, breaking at love in game six after a volley error from Zverev and securing the opener at 5-2 when the German hit a double fault. Filip won the first 12 points of the second set for complete control, serving for the victory at 5-3. Unwilling to surrender, Alexander broke back with a backhand down the line winner and that marked the beginning of his comeback, landing another perfect backhand winner to score a break at 5-5, stealing the set with a volley winner in game 12 and turning himself into a favorite. Filip stayed in touch until 2-2 in the final set before the German broke in the fifth game with another perfect backhand attack, confirming it with a hold at love and moving further in front after a forehand error from Krajinovic in the seventh game.

Serving for victory, Alexander held at love with a service winner for a 6-2 and the place in the semi-final, mighty relieved after a terrible start of the match. After all kind of drama and ups and downs, Pablo Carreno Busta defeated a former champion Fabio Fognini 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 in two hours and 38 minutes, trailing 6-3, 2-0 before performing a comeback after a lot of drama and excitement. The Spaniard won six points more than the Italian, fending off five out of ten break points and creating no less than 23 opportunities on the return, seizing six to find himself over the finish line. Fognini had the upper hand in the first set, breaking in games two and four and clinching it with a solid hold at 5-3. From 2-0 down in set number two, Carreno Busta claimed six straight games to take the upper hand ahead of the decider.

There, they traded four breaks in the first seven games and it was Fabio who had to dig deep in the closing stages to prolong the action, repelling five break points at 3-4 and four match points in game ten to reach a tie break that Pablo grabbed 7-4 to seal the deal and advance into the second ATP semi-final of the season and the first at the ATP 500 level since Barcelona last year. The defending champion Nikoloz Basilashvili needed 67 minutes to dismantle Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-3, losing serve once and delivering four breaks on the other side to control the scoreboard and remain in the title chase.
