Tamarine Tanasugarn To Play for Thailand in South East Asian Games
Tennis - Retired tennis star Tamarine Tanasugarn will make a comeback to the Thailand national team for the 2019 South East Asian Games. The decision was made at the meeting of executives of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand. Tanasugarn will join Luksika Kumkhum and Peangtarn Plipuech in the team for the Games and will play in the women's doubles and mixed doubles event, according to The Bangkok Post.
The men's team will include the Ratiwatana twins - Sanchai and Sonchat - and Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul. The teams can have up to five players each and the rest of the teams will be announced at a later date.
The South East Asian Games will be held in the Philippines from November 30th to December 11th. The manager of the tennis team will be Natinat Bulan while Witthaya Samrej will coach the women's squad and Weerapat Dokmaiklee will coach the men's team.
The Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, LTAT President Kitsombat Euammongkol said that Tanasugarn is still fit and hopes that she would be one of their key players at the Games, her first in four years.
The 42-year-old Tanasugarn is currently still active on the ITF Doubles Circuit - ranked No. 556 in doubles. She has been ranked as high as No. 19 in the world in singles and No. 15 in doubles. The Southeast Asian Games is held once in two years and is a multi-sport event involving participants from the current 11 countries of Southeast Asia. The games come under the regulation of the Southeast Asian Games Federation with supervision by the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia.
Thailand have done well in tennis at the South Asian Games in the past, winning four medals in 2017 - women's singles, women's doubles, men's doubles and mixed doubles. They missed out on the men's singles title in the last edition.
