Wimbledon day 2 recap: tears, zero confidence and super Old Gen
Wimbledon always knows how to excite fans and insiders, and the 133rd edition of the Championships bears witness to this factor. Today Roger Federer lost the first set but still managed to reach the second round. With him, Rafael Nadal, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kei Nishikori, Ashleigh Barty, Sloane Stephens, Angelique Kerber, Kiki Bertens, Amanda Anisimova and Serena Williams are also in the second round. Out three top players: Dominic Thiem (third top-10 of the ATP rankingeliminated in the first round - ed), Garbine Muguruza and Maria Sharapova.
Another great disappointed (and great disappointment of the tournament) was Naomi Osaka, yesterday eliminated by Yulia Putintseva. The Japanese had to suspend the press conference, in order to avoid showing tears to the press, in a clear emotional state.
Tennis is a matter of trust, especially at Wimbledon. Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas know it well. They are the emblem of the current defeat of the next Generation against the sparkling Old Gen players. Zverev says his confidence is almost zero. Tsitsipas says that he and Next Gen still do not have the continuity in the results typical of Federer, Nadal and the others. Maybe it's like they say, maybe they are both just overrated.
The technological avant-gard is always a source of pride for the Wimbledon organizers. Watson, the IBM Artificial Intelligence system, will be able to automatically make the highlights. It also promises to interpret the facial expressions of tennis players. Disappointment, triumph, concentration; the interesting, thesis, and most important moments of the matches will be isolated and they will be used to create the highlights.
Tomorrow on the court Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic, Kevin Anderson, Elina Svitolina, Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep and the young Coco Gauff.
