Wimbledon is complicated, according to Carla Suarez Navarro
Second best-ranked Spanish player on the WTA rankings, Carla Suarez Navarro revealed her opinion on The Championships before her opening match against Australian Samantha Stosur. As reported by Punto de Break, the World No. 31 stated, "Wimbledon is always a tournament a little more complicated than usual. We have fewer tournaments to try to adapt, in my case I had to miss the first of the tour in Birmingham for a small back injury and the previous week I could only play a match.”
Suarez Navarro was ousted 4-6 7-5 7-5 of the Eastbourne main draw by the Slovak Tamara Zidansek. The tournament, which preceded Wimbledon, was won by Karolina Pliskova, who defeated Angelique Kerber in the final.
“So we tried to train the previous days and adapt as well as possible,” concluded the Spaniard. “I will try to enjoy this edition going match by match.”
It seems like she is following her plan, as on the second day of the English Major’s main draw, she stunned Stosur in two sets, 6-2 7-5, setting a clash against Pauline Parmentier. To get to the round of 64, the French originated one of the surprises of the day by bypassing Russian Maria Sharapova, who had to retire at 0-5 in the third set because of issues with her left tendon.
Suarez Navarro and Parmentier have faced each other five times in the past. Even if the head-to-head is leaded by the French for three wins over two, they have never battled on a grass court -- four of their meetings happened on clay, and the most recent (Cincinnati 2014) on hard.
