Beating Federer and Nadal are some of my best memories, says Gonzalez
In an interview to W Radio Colombia, the former world No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez commented on what his best memories are as a professional player. The Chilean said: "The win over Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open, over Roger Federer in the ATP Finals, my win over Pete Sampras. There are many but I think those are my biggest successes."
On his 2007 Australian Open final loss to Federer, Gonzalez added: "It was hard. He was going through his best time. But it was a great week. Roger was much more experienced than me going into the match."
On the one-handed backhand players, Gonzalez said: "There are many. Shapovalov himself. Stan Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet, Grigor Dimitrov. It's good for tennis that it's both one and two-handed. The one-handed is more classic."
Recalling his farewell ceremony back in 2012 Miami after his loss to Nicolas Mahut, Gonzalez added: "The video was great. I mean, the top players‑‑ it's not only about tennis. It's also about friends. I mean, we have been playing against each other many times, but at the end of the day, we are friends. We have a great relationship. Of course, the atmosphere was great. We're really far away from Chile, and there were little flags. There was my family here. I had a lot of friends, and I really enjoyed the moment."
On his Olympic Games run, Gonzalez concluded: "Oh, that's huge. When I went to Athens‑‑ I play only two. In '04 when I went to Athens, I said maybe that's the only one. It's the chance I'm gonna have. Then I have the second chance and also have a great week. And also I think maybe this gonna be the end, no? After, you know, when I was like 27, 28, I always was enjoying every single time thinking about can be the last time. So I enjoy a lot."
