Borna Coric gives walkover to Grigor Dimitrov at US Open

Croatian tennis star Borna Coric has withdrawn from the US Open just hours before his second round match due to lower back strain, the tournament announced. 

Coric, who is enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 12 in the world, gave a walkover to 2017 Nitto ATP Finals Grigor Dimitrov. 

The match between Coric and Dimitrov was scheduled for the night session as it was one of the most anticipated second round matches in the men's event. 

On Monday, Coric firmly progressed into round two as he handed a straight-set defeat to Russia's Evgeny Donskoy in his opener at the tournament.

Despite a convincing start to the tournament, the 22-year-old didn't feel he was at the level he needed to be for a deep run. 

The Croatian made the round-of-16 at Flushing Meadows last year for the first time in his career before losing to eventual runner-up Juan Martin del a Potro. 

Coric will be hoping to soon forget his disappointing US summer hard-court campaign -- which also included a second round showing at the Montreal Masters and a first round exit at the Cincinnati Masters.
