Dominic Thiem: I need to improve my level if I want to win Kitzbuhel
Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem says the Kitzbuhel crowd helped him to overcome a tough day at the office and beat Spanish clay-court specialist Pablo Andujar in the Kitzbuhel quarterfinal.
Thiem, seeded at No. 1, didn't play his best tennis but still managed to beat world No. 75 Andujar in straight sets 7-6 (4) 6-4.
World No. 4 Thiem twice recovered from a break down in the first set to eventually force a tie-break -- where he converted his second set point to win a tight opener.
Andujar once again failed to capitalize on his lead as the Austrian lost the opening three games of the second set before winning six of the next seven to claim a straight-set win.
"It was a tough one today, not my best match with a lot of breaks,” Thiem said, as revealed on Tennis TourTalk. “I was 0-3 down in the second set but managed to fight back. I often have matches like this during a tournament but the crowd helped me a lot today.”
Thiem will fight against Antalya Open champion Lorenzo Sonego for a place in the Kitzbuhel final.
Thiem admits he will have to lift his game if he wants to win his maiden Kitzbuhel title.
"This is a positive sign but I want to win the tournament. However, I need to improve, otherwise it will not work out for me," Thiem added.
